DESCRIPTION
Travelling is deadly...for prejudices!
Mark Twain's saying is particularly apt for Romania, a country with friendly people, huge potential, but far too little known and burdened with far too many prejudices.
We invite you to join us in discovering the seemingly endless primeval forests of the Carpathians, the well-maintained pass roads, the mysterious monasteries, medieval fortified churches, picturesque villages and towns in eight days on a motorbike. Count Dracula, bears, wolves, quaint fairytale villages and breathtaking landscapes, hospitable people and delicious food. In a word: Carpathian country!
This tour is specially designed for motorcyclists who also like to make one or two cultural stops and city walks. For those who prefer more riding and less sightseeing, we recommend our Romania Tour. Transylvanian Passports.
Tour dates:
From Vienna approx. 2,550 km, medium difficulty, including motorway stages, city crossings and village roads with possible inadequacies or generally roads of different quality levels, sometimes also with potholes, short sections without asphalt possible. Mountain crossings with numerous bends and serpentines.
Our exclusive travel programme
Day 1: Vienna - Oradea
500 km
We meet at the agreed starting point near Vienna. First we have to master the connecting stage to Romania. We travel mainly on the motorway through the Hungarian Puszta, past Budapest to Oradea/Grossvardein. Hotel check-in and dinner in one of the most beautiful Art Nouveau centres in Europe.
TIP: There is a hotel at the starting point of the tour. For participants travelling further to Vienna, we recommend arriving the day before and spending the night there. We also recommend this extra night for participants with one of our hire motorbikes! And if you want to arrive by car and motorbike trailer at the start of the tour, you can park your car at the hotel during the tour (surcharge).
Day 2: Oradea - Coltesti
250 km
On our first day of travelling in Romania, we cross the Western Carpathians. Even though they are not the highest mountains in Romania, they are famous for their many spectacular formations with caves and gorges. We will cross a newly asphalted pass and towards evening we will reach a typical village that is a model of conservation and world heritage: Coltesti in the Rimetea area. In a small family hotel we are spoilt with cold beer and delicious Transylvanian specialities.
Day 3: Rimetea - Brasov
270 km
We say goodbye to the Western Carpathians and drive south-east along the "fortified church road". The area is famous for its many vineyards, which were already mentioned in documents in Roman times. We will see many quaint villages with centuries-old fortified churches and reach the Kockel valley at noon and with it the famous fortified church road. In the evening we will visit one of the most beautiful cities in Romania, Braşov/Kronstadt. Dinner and hotel check-in are planned in the city centre.
Day 4: Brasov - Curtea de Arges
185 km
After breakfast we will explore Brasov, with its more than 800 years of history. Among other things, we will visit the Black Church - the largest church between Vienna and Istanbul. Afterwards we continue past Bran (famous as Dracula Castle) to the Bucegi Mountains. The area used to be famous for its many flocks of sheep and some of the former shepherds' roads have been asphalted in recent years. One of these newly asphalted roads is on our programme today. We spend the evening in Curtea de Arges, one of the oldest settlements in the area.
Day 5: Curtea de Arges - Sibiu
160 km
The next highlight is waiting for us. The dream of every Romanian motorcyclist is to drive over the Transfagarasan High Alpine Road. It is Romania's most famous and spectacular road and was called the most beautiful road in the world by the heroes of the British car show "Top Gear". On the other side of the Carpathians, a little pearl awaits us: Sibiu/Hermannstadt. On our guided tour of the old castle we will learn more about the history of the Transylvanian Saxons, visit the old market places and enjoy delicious specialities over dinner.
Day 6: Sibiu - Eselnita
315 km
The highest pass road in the country awaits us: the Transalpina. At around 2,300 m above sea level, it is not only the highest road in Romania, it is also considered one of the most beautiful motorbike routes in the world and has only been asphalted throughout since 2012. In the afternoon we will reach the Iron Gates, our hotel is located directly on the Danube. After a short refreshment break, we will board small motorboats and ride through the narrowest parts of the Danube, past breath-taking views. Dinner with fish specialities in the guesthouse is also a highlight of the day.
Day 7: Eselnita - Timisoara
300 km
Already in the morning we experience another of Romania's newest and spectacular pass roads. We drive through an extremely impressive scenic region, the Danube breakthrough into the Carpathians, partly right along the border with Serbia. There could not be a better way to end the tour. In the afternoon we will reach Timişoara/Temeswar and discover this beautiful city, European Capital of Culture 2023, on a guided tour.
Day 8: Timisoara - Vienna
500 km
After breakfast we go home and it is time to say goodbye to our new Romanian friends. With many wonderful memories, we set off for home again, either independently or together with other tour participants in the group. End of the tour.
