Description

Discovering the Eastern European country of Bulgaria by motorbike is an experience that makes every motorcyclist's heart beat faster. Not only the choice of routes is a dream, but also the variety of this country surprises and amazes. The scenic diversity reveals itself through a tasty combination of lowlands, hilly landscapes, river valleys and high mountains. Driving pleasure is guaranteed in this unique natural experience. As varied as the landscape is, Bulgaria's thousand-year-old culture and history is rich in tradition. It is not uncommon to encounter the heritage of ancient civilisations, to drive through sleepy villages and past magnificent historic monasteries nestling picturesquely in the landscape. And while you still have the scent of blooming rose fields in your nose, you encounter a cultural mixture of Orient and Europe in the lively capital Sofia.

This tour is specially designed for motorcyclists who also like to make one or two cultural stops and city walks. For those who prefer more riding and less sightseeing, we recommend our Tour Bulgaria The South-West.

Tour dates:
From/to Vienna area approx. 4,500 km, medium difficulty, including motorway stages, city crossings and village roads with possible inadequacies or generally roads of different quality levels, sometimes also with potholes, short sections without asphalt possible. Mountain crossings with numerous curves and serpentines.

Our exclusive travel programme

Day 1 - Vienna - Belgrade (SRB)

590 km

Meet at the agreed starting point near Vienna. After getting to know each other briefly, we start our journey together. The route takes us past Budapest on the motorway to Serbia, where we make our stopover in a hotel in the centre of Belgrade on the way to Bulgaria. After arrival there will be time for a walk along the Danube. Overnight stay in Belgrade (SRB).

TIP:
There is a hotel at the starting point of the tour near Vienna. For participants who have a longer journey, it is advisable to arrive the day before and spend the night there. And for those who want to come to the start of the tour with a car and motorbike trailer, the car can be parked at the hotel during the tour (extra charge).

TIP:
Those who cannot or do not want to bring their luggage to the starting point on the motorbike are welcome to have it collected from their home using the luggage service. We will then bring it to the start of the tour in the support vehicle!

Day 2 - Belgrade - Belogradchik (BG)

305 km

We leave Belgrade and bridge the densely populated areas in the south via the motorway. We enjoy our lunch break in the Serbian hinterland before we reach the Bulgarian border in the afternoon. Before dinner we visit the famous fortress of Belogradchik, a miraculously formed rock formation. Overnight stay in Belogradchik (BG).

Day 3 - Belogradchik - Sofia (BG)

240 km

The capital of Bulgaria awaits us! Before we reach Sofia, however, we will ride a great motorbike route and cross the Balkan Mountains to the south. Upon arrival in Sofia, we will take a German-speaking guided walking tour with a local guide in the centre of Sofia to get to know the history and culture of this extraordinary city. Overnight in Sofia (BG).

Day 4 - Sofia - Rila (BG)

155 km

We spend the morning in Sofia's city centre again and have time to stock up on souvenirs for the trip or simply watch the hustle and bustle in the pedestrian zone over a leisurely coffee and enjoy the charm of this impressive city. Around noon we leave the Bulgarian capital and head for the Rila Mountains and the national park of the same name, where the next cultural-historical treat awaits us: the over 1,000-year-old monastery of St. Ivan of Rila is the most important and largest monastery in Bulgaria, and during a guided tour we will hear about the history of the monastery. Overnight stay in Rila (BG).

Day 5 - Rila - Bansko (BG)

260 km

The whole day we will be accompanied by the "Vichren", with 2,914 m one of the highest peaks in Bulgaria, and today we will cycle almost completely around it. We will have a lunch break in the smallest town in Bulgaria with 200 inhabitants. It has been a "museum town" since 1968 and is also known for its sandstone pyramids and the local red wine, which Winston Churchill also liked to drink. We will spend the night in one of the country's top ski resorts at the foot of the Pinin Mountains, in Bansko (BG).

Day 6 - Bansko - Smoljan (BG)

245 km

One of the most beautiful driving days of the tour awaits us. Countless curves, a few reservoirs and mostly very good roads lead us through the south-west of Bulgaria to the small town of Smoljan in the Rhodepen Mountains, situated at about 1,000 m above sea level. Overnight stay in Smoljan (BG).

Day 7 - Smolyan - Ivaylovgrad (BG)

290 km

Another great day of driving awaits us, taking us to the vicinity of the Bulgaria-Greece-Turkey border triangle. The roads today are of varying quality, some brand new, some clearly not. The cultural highlight of the day is the archaeological excavations at the ancient Roman villa Armira. Overnight stay in the Ivajlovgrad area (BG).

Day 8 - Ivaylovgrad - Nesebar/Sunny Beach (BG)

280 km

We leave the mountainous part of Bulgaria and reach the Upper Thracian Plain, which is bordered by the Black Sea to the east. And that is where we are going! After a week "on the road" we spend the next 3 nights in a great hotel near Nesebar on the famous Bulgarian Sunny Beach and have the choice between one or two rest days. Overnight stay in the Nesebar/Sunny Beach area (BG).

Day 9 - Sunny Beach

0 km

Day at leisure. We enjoy the amenities of our hotel by the sea and let ourselves go. If the beach is too boring for you, you can make an excursion on your own, e.g. to the old town of Nesebar (UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage!) or to Varna, not far away. Overnight stay in the Nesebar/Sunny Beach area (BG).

Day 10 - Sunny Beach (0 km) or day trip to the Turkish border

330 km

Today we have a choice: Either enjoy another day of rest, or make an excursion to the southernmost point of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast on the Turkish border. Last night in the Nesebar/Sunny Beach area (BG).

Day 11 - Sunny Beach - Veliko Tarnovo (BG)

360 km

After relaxing on Sunny Beach, we are ready for new "tasks". Veliko Tarnovo, the former capital of Bulgaria, is waiting for us. Thanks to its location on the northern slopes of the Balkan Mountains at the gorge of the river Jantra and its architectural monuments, it is an important tourist destination. The day will also be interesting from a driving point of view, as after a stretch of motorway to bridge the gap, we cross the Balkan Mountains towards the north. Overnight in Veliko Tarnovo (BG).

Day 12 - Veliko Tarnovo - Plovdiv (BG)

230 km

We cross the Balkan Mountains again via a great pass route south to the Thracian lowlands. Situated at the foot of the Rhodope Mountains, Plovdiv was European Capital of Culture in 2019 and is considered the oldest city in Europe. The first settlements date back 6,000 years. Before dinner, we will get a deeper insight into the history of the city during a guided city walk in German. Overnight stay in Plovdiv (BG).

Day 13 - Plovdiv - Montana (BG)

260 km

For the last time we cross the Balkan Mountains, this time heading north and towards home. So that we can really enjoy the mountainous stretch ahead of us, we take the motorway in the built-up lowlands. We spend our last night in the country that has become so dear to us at the north-western end of the pre-Balkan in the small town of Montana (BG).

Day 14 - Montana - Reschitz (RO)

360 km

In the morning we have to say goodbye to Bulgaria for good after some very nice days: We cross the Danube northwards and thus the border to Romania. But there are also great motorbike routes in Romania, and one of them - freshly renovated to boot - is still on the agenda today! The hotel for the night is in the Banat Mountains, in the former K. & K. mining town of Reschitz, or in Romanian: Reşiţa (RO).

Day 15 - Reschitz - Vienna (Ö)

600 km

Unfortunately, it is time to say goodbye today. With many wonderful memories in our luggage, we are on our way home. Most of the way back to the tour start location near Vienna is on the motorway. As the bikes are faster than the luggage car, "hurried" participants already take their luggage with them. Those who don't like this can also pick it up later at the tour start hotel. End of the tour.

TIP:
For those for whom the route to Vienna would be a diversion on the way home, they can already say goodbye to the other tour participants on departure from the hotel and make their way home independently. If there is not enough room for your luggage on the motorbike, we can send it home using our luggage service.

A frank word among bikers

We do not do a driving course on our trip, but a challenging and varied motorbike tour. On guided motorbike tours with your own motorbike, riders and passengers from different countries of origin and with different motorbikes meet for a joint trip. As different as the participants are, as different will usually be the motorbikes, which makes for a fun and interesting trip.

As with all group activities, a certain team spirit and a certain adaptation of the individual to the group is necessary for these tours. If you let yourself go, you will certainly "experience" a great tour, meet new friends and have a lot of fun, because the shared experience of driving dynamics and the magic of curves in a charming landscape unites people. And on this trip, the focus is on motorcycling in the unique and sensational landscape.
